Common Fridge Problems

Six refrigerator complaints that keep our Grapevine schedule full, each listed with the parts we check before anything else.

  • Upper shelves barely cool

Cold air made in the freezer never arrives up top, usually because its fan stalled or the air channel iced over.

Usual suspectsEvaporator fan, air damper, thermistor

  • Freezer coated in frost

The automatic defrost has stopped working, so ice stacks up on the coil until little cold air gets through.

Usual suspectsDefrost heater, bi-metal thermostat, control board

  • Puddles under the drawers

Meltwater is escaping because the drain tube froze solid or a water line fitting has worked loose.

Usual suspectsDrain tube, drain pan, inlet fitting

  • Ice maker on vacation

Too little water makes it to the ice mold, thanks to a tired inlet valve, an overdue water filter or a worn-out ice unit.

Usual suspectsFill valve, water filter, ice maker module

  • New buzzing, ticking or humming

Blades striking ice, a condenser fan motor wearing out or a relay clicking the compressor in and out.

Usual suspectsCondenser fan, start relay, fan blades

  • Runs and runs without a break

Dusty coils or a gasket that no longer grips force the system to work nonstop just to keep up.

Usual suspectsCondenser coils, door gasket, sensor

Fridge Repair Reviews

Messages from Grapevine homeowners once their refrigerators were humming along again.

Zeb R.Stonebridge Oaks, Grapevine

Hey, just wanted to say thanks again. The freezer was covered in frost and the milk was going warm.

Your guy swapped the defrost heater and sensor in under an hour, and everything is back to normal temps.

Fridge started dripping all over the kitchen floor last week.

He cleared a frozen drain tube, cleaned the pan and pointed out the spot to watch. Dry ever since!

Ice maker quit right before a pool party, of course.

New fill valve and filter, and we had a bin full of ice by the evening. Lifesaver.

Before You Call

Answer these in order. Each yes moves you one step closer to a working fridge, and each no comes with a quick fix to try.

  1. Is the light coming on when you open the door?

Peek at the electrical panel for a tripped switch, then confirm the socket works using a small lamp.

  2. Is the dial close to 37°F for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer?

Turn the settings back to those numbers and give the fridge a full day to settle.

  3. Are the vents inside clear of food packages?

Shift boxes and bottles off the vents, giving chilled air a clear path between compartments.

  4. Do the doors seal tight all around?

Clean the gaskets with warm soapy water and make sure nothing is propping a door open.

Still warm after all four?

Time for a technician. Certified and insured pros take it from here.
